Mastros Ocean Club

Was invited to join my VP and a big client for dinner last night. The restaurant we went to is called Mastros Ocean Club at Newport Beach. It is one of the most expensive restaurant I’ve ever been. At the end of the night, for six of us, the bill comes out to be over $1,200. I don’t think I’ll ever go back there again :P

I go to see friends who play the lounge occasionally. Very "cool" as in chilly atmosphere, marble not too condusive to dancing, but some do attempt - My friend and I choose to sit at a table (tables are high enough to comfortably stand at, so imagine the chairs) where we can people watch. The other options are the bar or the "piano" which is a grand piano surrounded with chairs occupied by fancy women (groupies?) competing to be noticed and at the forefront of availability. My 1st visit there and after ordering 2 glasses of reisling I was readying a 20 to pay, I had to pull another 20 as the total was announced upon serving. ok, no biggee I had it on me and now know. The place could use a bit more warmth to it, at those prices. I dont notice too much staff & patron snooty-ness that so many I know complain about and won't go because of it, but I figure the staff are the worker bees and waiting on ME!! The rest of em I figure, are either writing off the expenses as business related. The piano groupies stay tight as they stick to ordering 1 strong drink with a water back and will nurse that all night long I notice, until some man with high hopes decides to take the gamble and buy one or two of them another drink. The rest of the crowd I think are probably hawked up to ther ears in pre-bankruptsy debt, and those remaining less then 1/2 dozen maybe ARE people whose income is relative enough to the pricing which makes it their equivalent to an average diner's T.B Scotts. I have observed people seem to get the 'once over' upon arrival so dress nice (no Red Lobster attire please.) I've never had an opportunity to eat dinner here, and I would like to try it at least once. I do think there are less pretentious places down PCH towards Newport though. Be sure and take ATM MAX if paying cash for 2 or less people, or a good credit card with a high limit if more than 2. This is defineately NOT the place Lykis has in mind for you to take a date, gentlemen. Ms M.
